Always interested in time and motion, Showell began exploring, bringing an abstract sensibility to landscapes. He would spend hours in Central Park, sitting beside a video camera trained on an area he wanted to paint, drinking coffee and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. When the tape ran out, he would bring it back to his studio in Chinatown, pop it into a video deck and paint from that image.
